‘Anyone who chooses to do the will of God’. John

For centuries Christians have wrestled with the notion of an omnipotent God and free will. Freedom of choice is acknowledged as the greatest of all the gifts bestowed upon man by God but an omnipotent God must logically know all things including the future therefore we live in a deterministic universe and free choice is an illusion ‘ in their hearts humans plan their course but the Lord establishes their steps’ Proverbs. Indeed it’s perfectly possible to conceive of a world where wisdom has advanced to the point that a computer is designed that knows the condition of all created matter and therefore in a  position to predict the outcome of all things and thus we would achieve the mind of God. Quantum physics , of course, changed all this and has been jumped upon by Christian scientists as proof of free will.

Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle proved that the position and velocity of a particle cannot both be measured exactly at the same time even in theory. The very concepts of exact position and velocity together in fact have no meaning in nature therefore since the brain functions at a sub atomic level it’s actions are unpredictable. Indeed Shrodingers live and dead cat suggests that all possible states exist and that only the act of observation determines an outcome. My view is that it’s not that complicated as C.S Lewis noted even God can’t make a circle square the very act of creation imposed laws that bind even the divine. God created everything and therefore all possible outcomes are contained in his being which outcome occurs for good or bad is the gift of free will that he has given to us.
