Either Dawkins 'blind pitiless indifference no design no purpose no evil no good' an amoral universe, relativism writ large, mankind a meaningless cosmic quirk. Or a God who got bored and walked away over two thousand years since God showed himself to his creation too dim and distant for any contemporary relevance. First if God is God all eternity is his present but that doesn't really address the question. I believe as CS Lewi s wrote ‘I see it because with its light I see everything’. The answer to the question ‘quis seperabit’ lays all around us if only we care to look. Not just in the world of science dual codings, overlapping proteins, systems that direct the retrieval of dispersed data files specific molecular machines that appear irreducibly complex as Einstein said ‘ the only incomprehensible thing about the universe is that its comprehensive. But also in the materialistic universe emotions of love, joy, spirituality empathy the creation of beauty are inexplicable. The light and presence of God is seen in Pope Francis breaking down as he speaks of the bloodshed and atrocities in Ukraine, a nun in south Sudan wiping the tears and flies from the eyes of a crippled child. A friend leaving his car in the middle of a busy road in the pouring rain to save a stranded kitten. Deeds that ring the bell of good like sunlight the message of the gospel leaps to sparkle from wave to wave through the centuries.
We can see God in his presence but also as clearly in his absence when humanity forsakes and forgets God the worst possible horrors light the bonfire of materialism. Events such as the holocaust are such extreme acts of evil such as cannot be explained by an atheistic mechanism as in the novel ‘crime and punishment’ they show a morality the source of which is divine. Absolute evil shows the existence of absolute truth in the person of Jesus Christ.
