Many of us I believe fall into the trap of assuming that God thinks like a man. He may have made us in his image but one thing is certain that Gods thoughts are not like our thoughts nor his ways our ways. First God must be beyond time and therefore in the eternal present encompassing everything that is and will be both living and non living as literally he has willed all things to come to pass. Surely the whole bible up until the gospels can be summed up as the story of the struggle for mankind to understand God but also crucially Gods endeavor to understand man . One of the most fascinating and revealing features of the Old Testament are the twists and turns of that relationship as both parties try to come to an accommodation no where better described than in the book of Job. Free will as a result of the fall or as I prefer to see it as the inevitable and unavoidable gift of a loving God created a conundrum which only the birth of Christ was finally able to answer as a response to the question ' what are Gods ways' ? God by the act of incarnation, took it upon himself to suffer as a man, by doing so he created a bridge of understanding to us for all time. By way of the definitive statement as to his intent and being. Free will is the gun he created by allowing us access to love .It compelled him to step in front of the barrel and in effect ' take the bullet'. God loves us so much that he sent his son to show us the exit from the sin that his gift of free will allows us the choice to inflict upon ourselves. Finally God was able to say to man ' my peace I leave you.'
