Christ satisfied Gods wrath. As Christians we believe that God is perfectly good any being that is perfect would be outraged by sin. So there is at the centre of Gods relationship with man a huge dichotomy . God has to give mankind the freedom to sin as ' agape' to be of its highest value must be freely given . Love with no strings attached. But if we sin there must be consequences for if there isnt the whole thing becomes meaningless. There is no mortal man who can atone for the sins of all men. Therefore God must become man in order to sacrifice himself and suffer for the sins of his creation.
It all sounds very strange and convoluted but I cannot see any other way that things could work. God requires the love of his creation he needs someone to share his joy for without sharing, happiness looses one of its key elements.True happiness , at least in this world , requires freedom so as a result of Gods design , sin becomes its inevitable twin just the same as pleasure needs pain to be of value.Sin like all things has to conform to certain laws which have consequences that cannot be escaped . True love on the other hand requires forgiveness so God must offer salvation but someone has to pay the price of sin. Enter therefore the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the ability for God to give man two things a fresh start and an ongoing mechanism to wash away the inevitability of further sin.
Back to universal choice again you can of course choose not to believe or at least see God as either never having no ongoing interest in his creation or in effect growing bored and moving on. For me that's too close to small boys picking the wings off flies for their sport. If however you look for divine engagement it is difficult to see things being any other than the way they are.
