Why do material possessions not confer lasting happiness? Maybe the statement can be refined to why doesn't money bring happiness? If you think about it logically there is no reason it shouldn't. Happiness and joy are both states of mind which promote physical benefits so the laws of evolution should have provided a path to a state of permanent mental happiness as it allows for us to function at our best. As they give our lives purpose and meaning there's no obvious rationale why the money and power so many seek can't do the same. But time and time again we discover empirically that you cant buy contentment that you can have either power or love but not both.
We are hardwired for seemingly inexplicable desires that the world is not created to provide. That's not to say that it doesn't have signposts such as love, beauty, music but they all point in another direction. It seems that things we can touch have a finite value that does not provide lasting satisfaction . It would seem that only the spiritual , the joys we cant explain other than in metaphysical terms provide the only peace ‘that passes all understanding’.
As we age we seek more and more the purpose and reason behind our existence this desire, I believe , is the finger print of God I don't see any other explanation. Dr Steven Meyers talks about the ‘ signature in the cell’ this is the signature in our souls.
