God comes down on earth to reign

Words from a beautiful carol but if it were true how would it happen? I believe that the birth and life of Jesus Christ was a divine response to the inevitable conundrum of free will. God is love and true love can only be given and received freely without any coercion. But God is a loving father and therefore knows that his children can only be happy if they follow the right path, as they are created in his image which is pure love.Free will gives them the choice but this choice can only be of worth if it is clear and they understand why one set of values leads to light and happiness and the other to darkness and sorrow. How then to present his true nature to humanity without doing it in a way that demonstrates that free will is an illusion.

I have an atheist friend who is always saying to me when referring to Christ you couldn’t "make this stuff up" I always reply "no you couldnt".The life of Christ is extraordinary in many ways but as CS Lewis asked could it have been any different? The mark of God is perfection the realization that a thing cannot be improved. The dawn or love by example. The work of man inevitably comes with the comment ` I think this could be better’ When you read the journey of Christ in the gospels it comes across as being strange, counter intuitive and oxymoronic .Everything we think of as traditionally connected with supreme power and majesty is turned on its head and presented in a very different way . But like the petals of the rose impossible to improve and the faith of billions over the centuries proof that "when I pass all my children know me".
