"I will take my rest and I will look from my dwelling place."Isiah 18

The peace of God that passeth all understanding. Silence is a strangely powerful phenomenon the desire for solitude the need to get away from the noise and confusion of life is often overwhelming ' I need some peace and quiet so I can hear myself think'. It's not just a matter of getting away from the world but also the echo of its clamouring within ourselves.Something we feel is being blocked we are being cut off from an existential current that we need that is as fundamental to us as breathing.

All the great religions talk of the mystical nature of silence in our relationship with God the strongest prayers are made in silence. Being able to hear the noise of God : waves on a beach , the wind, birds singing allows our hearts a touch of the divine ' when the soul lies down in that grass the world is too full to talk about.' I don't think it's any mystery why being able to sit happily in silence with another human being is the sign of a contented relationship. The same with God he doesn't shout for our attention we observe him as we do a beautiful view. It's always there but we need to climb the hill and open our eyes and heart in order to appreciate it.The signposts up the hill are there for us all to see but we have to learn to read them. Everything lays in Gods eternal peace we gain nothing from rushing from place to place racing the clock ' time my Lord has a wallet at his back in which he puts alms for oblivion'. God is the only changeless reality his silence is the silence of eternal bliss and we should all take time from the world and allow this silence to illuminate the path to peace.
