I believe that one of the clearest sign posts to both the nature and existence of God is that he mirrors his persona to us through phenomenon such as the moral law, love, wisdom. He allows us to experience some of the glow of joy that resonates from his creation. God lets us peep through the cracks of the door of being. When I was growing up my family had a beautiful garden. Our gardener was in his seventies but had worked in the same garden day in day out since the age of 14. He used to tell me proudly that he had never taken a days sick leave. I asked him why he was so contented working in such a surrounding and he replied’ its the joy of watching things grow’. He spoke of the endless wonder of seeing the seed germinate into a seedling through to a fully developed flower. He was a theist but never went to church for him everything he wanted to know about God was contained in his garden.
It struck me that this cycle of growth and change from the small moving through the seasons to full growth is exactly the same for us and the rest of the animal kingdom. For humans the seed develops from a baby to a teenager and on to an adult. The person I was 30 years ago is very different to whom I am today but I am the same creation. The joy of parenting is the appreciation of watching this growth both physical and mental. This seems to apply to all life its not one off creation but an ongoing process that is the manifestation of divine joy. So to the moral law, love, beauty, wisdom you add evolution and the ability through it to see God. This wonder of evolution is beautifully described by the head of the human genome project Dr Francis Collins.
‘The God of the bible is also the God of the genome. He can be worshipped in a cathedral or a laboratory his creation is awesome , intricate and majestic it cannot be at war with itself’.
