The above is one of my favorite quotes and represents a view of the purpose of life which many Christian churches have forgotten. Christianity should be at its core so much more than standing in church singing hymns or listening to sermons. I'm not saying that formal religious services cant play an important role in the life of many Christians. Yes Christ taught us how to pray but his life was one of action and involvement. Curing the sick, feeding the multitudes, turning water into wine. His parables contained active examples of forgiveness, helping your fellow man, spiritual growth. He immersed himself in the world 'love your neighbour' is not a passive command. Historically and empirically for me Christianity has always been at its strongest when it is invested in peoples lives. To exist as Christ taught it must have relevance love in action is more powerful than a thousand books.
I think trying to defend Christianity intellectually and Christs position as the son of God is fine but the intellect alone can only go so far it lacks the burning immediacy and clarity of the likes of Mother Theresa. In order to enter peoples lives the message must first become part of them. The son of God to be believed doesn't need to be defended his teachings just need to be followed. ‘Doors that I open can never be closed and doors that I close can never be opened’. The door that he opened are contained in the four gospels they lead us to his message love, joy, peace forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness self-control’. This is the ‘good news’ that every Christian church should focus on both in word and deed.
