Freedom to choose means consequences and here we move into an area most often used by those who argue against belief in God. There seems to be two laws that govern existence a moral law and a natural law which to me are different and quite distinct.By example gravity is a natural law it is what it is and at least in this world it is immutable . But moral law is a matter of choice and a decision between doing what is correct rather than what’s wrong. But how do we know this? Because for most of us the right decision makes us feel good whilst the wrong one pricks our conscience. Some would say that it’s just instinct and a sociological Darwinian response to the need for an ordered world. But that’s rubbish let’s look at a few examples. An old lady falls into a fast flowing river and a twenty year old man in the prime of life makes the decision to dive in to save her. The logical ‘ survival of the fittest’ and propagation of the species decision is that he shouldn’t and yet he does as he knows it s the right thing to do. Nuns such as the sisters of mercy caring for crippled and deformed children who don’t have any chance of maturing into adults who will be able to support and contribute to the community but the nuns still nurse the children anyway. Giving to charity rather than using the money on yourself is an act that brings a joy of itself but why? God doesn’t want to compel us to do the right thing but in the cause and effect that happens to each of us in applying the moral law he leaves a clear sign post as to his presence and concerns alongside the ability to learn from our mistakes. Because what father wouldn’t want his children to be able to grow in wisdom and joy.
All of this, of course, in a physical world brings about the inevitability of pain. Love , joy, peace , happiness must have opposites otherwise they are all meaningless. For me the choice was Gods solitude or creation our God is love therefore the decision was inevitable and the result exactly the world we live in.
